Jessi Gotta may not have the longest resume out of our Horror Queens, but she has already written, produced, directed, and acted in horror projects. That is why she is deserving of the Horror Queen crown.
At what age did you know you wanted to be in the movie world?
I knew I always wanted to be an actor, I just didn’t know exactly where that would lead me. The drive to write and produce films came later.
How do you feel about horror movies’ role in popular culture?
Horror films play such a big role in pop culture; they’re responsible for holding up a mirror to a culture’s fears. Horror turns things we hope aren’t real, REAL. And that fear unites us…and fear is such a powerful emotion. You finish watching a good horror movie and it’s like your mind and body are on overload. It’s such an overwhelming rush for the senses and it makes you feel alive. No genre does that quite like horror can.
What’s your favorite horror movie?
Damn, I always try to avoid that question because I don’t have one favorite, and I know that sounds like a cop out. There are too many that I am in love with to pick just one. The original HALLOWEEN, Carpenter’s THE THING, FIRE WALK WITH ME, THE SHINING, and the original TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE… I could go on.
What was the best advice that you have been given and who gave it to you?
My father told me that you have to look at everything, no matter how bad it may be, as a learning experience. You just have to figure out what the right lesson to learn is.
What advice do you have for up and coming Horror Queens?
Just get out there and do it, and don’t be afraid to make your own horror film. We all waste too much time being afraid of trying. Life is too short for that.
Any new projects we should be on the lookout for?
Oh hell yeah! We just finished working on a horror comedy feature that I wrote and produced titled THEY WILL OUTLIVE US ALL. The film is set in 2016. In the years since Hurricane Sandy, New York has been brought to its knees by a series of “Frankenstorms.” Roommates Margot and Daniel attempt to survive this “new” New York by avoiding it at all costs. But with the advent of three strange deaths in their Brooklyn building, the world they’ve been hiding from is knocking hard on the back door. We have started submitting it to festivals, so it will be out in the world soon!
