What first attracted you to photography?
I’ve been an artist in different mediums for my entire life—first charcoal, then paint, and now technology. I’ve always loved the idea of being able to ‘freeze time’ around the people, places, and moments that matter to me.
I was around 12 years old when I first picked up a camera. Throughout years of academic art training, I kept finding myself redirected back to photography. Fast forward to 2023, when I purchased my first professional camera. Once it was in my hands? Game over!
What is a moment you are most proud of in regard to photography?
I’m always up for a good challenge, so when I had the chance to photograph a multifaceted concert featuring laser overlays, I knew I couldn’t miss the opportunity. I strategized, adjusted quickly, and worked intentionally throughout the performance. I captured the laser designs beautifully layered across the artists—something that was incredibly difficult to photograph.
I was proud not only of the final images, but also of my ability to think creatively and work through the challenge in real time.
What is your favorite style or subject to shoot?
While I try to find something unique and meaningful in everything I photograph, music has always been a major part of my life. As a musician myself, I naturally gravitate toward concerts and live performances.
I also love detail shots and moody, cinematic interpretations of everyday life. I truly believe there is a blessing in slowing down long enough to find beauty in the details that others may overlook.
What is your favorite piece of equipment?
I took a chance on an Amazon-brand ENEGON LED light attachment specifically for a nighttime motorcycle couples shoot, and I completely fell in love with it. It has an impressive brightness and color range, along with a surprisingly strong battery life. Local bands have even borrowed it during shows to help with their own stage lighting—especially the drummers in the back. We want to see you too!
I’ve experimented with specialty lenses, fisheyes, and other accessories, but I honestly enjoy the challenge of pushing my camera and my own creativity without relying on a huge amount of extra equipment. Sometimes, less really is more.
What is your dream photography gig?
I fully believe it is possible to have more than one dream at the same time.
My current dream is to become more connected within the music festival scene. Festivals allow you to capture so many stories at once—the story of the event, the stories of the artists, and the stories of the people in the crowd who are experiencing something unforgettable. I would love to photograph the people who, like me, are now living moments their younger selves could only dream about.
Do you have any advice for others interested in photography?
As corny as it may sound, just do it.
Getting past that tipping point of asking, “Can I really do this? Am I good enough? What if something goes wrong?” made all the difference for me. You can fill in that blank with almost any fear or worry under the sun, but you cannot let it stop you from beginning. Buy the inexpensive gear from Facebook Marketplace. Go photograph the local shows. Watch YouTube tutorials until you can practically finish the instructor’s sentences. Practice, experiment, and allow yourself to learn as you go.
It is worth it.
What is the best piece of advice you received when starting out?
You are the only you out here, so please see that as a blessing.
That alone makes your perspective and your creative ideas worth exploring. Someone else may be encouraged by your bravery, your creativity, or your willingness to try something different. Do not be afraid to talk to people, ask questions, seek advice, and find inspiration in the artists around you. Throughout my experience of pursuing this newfangled creative career path, the good has far, far outweighed the bad.
Most of the time, the worst thing standing in our way is happening inside our own heads. We really are our own worst enemies nine times out of ten.
