This is a fun first for our photographer series: Swing Wing Productions is all about aerial photography. This isn’t just a small go-pro camera – this is the real deal. Watch this video to get an idea of what their rig is: http://vimeo.com/89981274
Where are you based out of?
My home base is in Destin, FL, but I travel all over the country doing work. In the last two years, we have worked in 46 states.
What first attracted you to photography?
Initially, it had to be a fourth grade project I did on Stone Mountain outside Atlanta, GA. My dad taught me how to use his old Nikon, frame the subject, get some depth, and most importantly how not to drop his expensive camera.
When was the first time you felt like a professional photographer?
It had to be the first time the phone rang with a client on the other end, asking me to get some pictures of a house for sale. You never forget your first sale!
Favorite style or subject to shoot?
Well, all of our work is done from unmanned drones, so our style is–by default–aerial. But my favorite shoot we’ve done was of a wind farm in west Texas. The pictures we got are some that no manned helicopter could have gotten without extreme risk, so that sets them apart and gives them some real wow-factor.
Favorite piece of equipment?
That’s got to be my newest custom-built hexa-copter. It took several days to build, and then several more days to tweak and modify so it was just right. I’m always looking for ways to improve, so there’s generally some modification being planned, or new helicopter being built.
What is your dream photography gig?
I would love to take video for a major sporting event, like the Olympics or X-Games. At the Sochi Olympics there were multi-rotor helicopters taking video during the Slopestyle competition. I want that to be me.
Any advice for others who are interested in photography?
Read. Listen to others with more experience. But most importantly, go out there and take some pictures. Tweak your settings. Figure out what works and what doesn’t. Play around with extreme settings and see the effects on the picture. There’s no substitute for experience. Go get some.
Best piece of advice you got starting out?
For doing aerial work: Set that shutter speed high, boy!
What services do you offer?
Swing Wing Productions is a full service production house. We not only take high definition aerial photos and video. We also do post-production video editing, website creation, logo design, social media, and more.
