Photographer Profile: Weston Wilkerson aka 850SithLord
What first attracted you to photography?
Being a DJ 10+ plus years along the Gulf Coast, I was very fortunate to have my pictures taken by some of the best along the Gulf Coast and formed friendships. I always admired how they captured the moment. I can go back and look at those pics of being on stage and it puts me right back to that moment. It’s something special and something to cherish.
What is a moment you are most proud of in regards to photography?
I had been working on this Nightmare Before Christmas idea and went all out, made a diorama, miniature headstones, my wife helped me make jack o’ lanterns, the whole 9 yards. So, after it was said and done, I released the images to the public and sent them to a world-renowned toy photographer from Pixar who heavily inspired me. He critiqued them and said he really loved them. It really made my day and reinsured me that if I just keep at it, I’ll get better and better.
Favorite style or subject to shoot?
I’m all about the action figures. I love making characters ‘float’ with wire or stands, to make it as practical as I can without using too much Photoshop. As far as favorite action figures, it would have to be NECA horror or Star Wars the Black Series.
Favorite piece of equipment?
I recently just got a Canon 7D and I’m still learning the ropes on it, but I would say so far it would definitely be it, that and my tripod lol.
What is your dream photography gig?
I’m not really sure it’s a dream gig, but I would love to be sponsored by Hasbro or Neca so I don’t have to buy action figures anymore!
Any advice for others who are interested in photography?
Just Do It! Find your own groove and just go for it!
Best piece of advice you received starting out?
Have fun! Do your own thing. Honestly, photographers, I’ve looked up too have been so supportive and encouraging and always are dropping knowledge on me I’m very grateful for them.
