Seaside Rep’s Spring Events!

The REP Theatre in Seaside is bringing the focus back to the magic of storytelling with two outdoor family friendly performances during Spring Break. Grab a blanket and a snack to enjoy The Commedia Rapunzel and The Stinky Cheese Man with your whole family before sunset. In the storytelling tradition, catch A Muscle Shoals Music Revue with Amy Black for a soulful side of roots music.

Rapunzel, first published by the Brothers Grimm in 1812, is a story that dates back to the 10th Century Persian story, Rudaba, and has twisted and tangled its way through time and space ever since. The REP’s adaptation, highlights the popular 16th century the acting style of commedia dell’arte. This style of acting had tremendous impact in the theatre world, establishing professional theatre companies, giving women onstage acting roles, and has gone on to influence artists of all types, making its way into opera, ballet, the paintings of Picasso, all the way to the Marx Brothers, and TV shows like The Office or The Simpsons. You can catch The Commedia Rapunzel at the Seaside Amphitheater on Mondays at 5:00PM from February 29th to April 4th.

The Stinky Cheese Man is based off of the popular children’s book, by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith. It features all the best classic children’s tales we were told as children, with a charming twist of absurdity and mayhem. With an irreverent sense of humor, this show has always been a crowd favorite, and brings together generations of family through laughter. Inspired by the original book’s ability to make reading fun and exciting, The REP strives to bring big laughs and fun back to the theatre with this rompus production. The Stinky Cheese Man will be performed in North Barrett Square in Rosemary Beach on Wednesdays at 5:00PM from March 9th to April Not only does The REP perform and share the stories, but they also share the craft of storytelling and theatre arts with local and visiting students.

This spring, The REP continues their popular children’s Improv Bootcamp sessions. Through these sessions, students learn all the basics of improv by focusing on teamwork, creativity, and thinking outside the box. Students as young as 5 will get to be onstage, learning and performing for their friends and family with The REP’s talented actor/teachers. Improv Bootcamp will be held March 1st to April 1st, at 12:00PM for ages 59 and 1:30PM for ages 10 and up. On Friday, students get to strut their stuff on The REP stage for their friends and family in the Improv Army held at 11:00AM at The REP.

The American Songwriter Magazine calls Amy Black “a powerful, authentic, talented and above all soulful new entry in the rootsy singer/songwriter ranks;” while the Philadelphia Inquirer calls her ”an appealing cross between Bonnie Raitt and Mary Chapin Carpenter” with “songs that mix substance and accessibility.” A Bostonbased artist with storytelling and southern tradition in her blood, her seamless blend of all things Americana, coupled with her soulful, smooth vocals and gift for bringing characters to life through song make her an artist that pleases lovers of blues, soul and country alike. Amy will be LIVE@TheREP on Thursday, March 24th at 7:30PM.

Theatre is a collaborative art form that is never truly realized until it is seen by an audience. You are the most essential part of what The REP does and you’ll enjoy taking a break from the isolation of 4G streaming online video screens and making a connection with The REP and the wonderful community here in South Walton, Florida.
