Perfect Dark – A Light for the Scene

“I really like music and the expression of it.”

Mark Maloney, the lead singer from Pensacola metal band Perfect Dark, talked with us about his philosophy on the importance of a music family and his hopes to use the power of music for a greater good.

“It is important to have support from your family and friends. Especially when you are a musician or artist, because a lot of times it is a struggle. It doesn’t make you a lot of money, and only the people that like you and really love you a lot will care with you along the way – they will care with you about what you care about.”

“I think that one of the things that drags people like us into groups, is that there is something in us that wants to work with other people. We want to be social, the brotherhood, and camaraderie.”

“The founding was sort of just James, Keith, and I – and shortly after Paul made up the four of us.”

The current Perfect Dark line-up is:
James Hestand -Guitar
Mark Maloney -Vocals
Keith Eads -Drums
Paul Fowler -Guitar
Chris Dooley-Bass

The name ‘Perfect Dark’ came from a progressive metal song by Beyond Twilight – not the video game which the group was introduced to later.

So how does a song come about? “A song is usually an amalgamation of everybody’s ideas,” explains Mark. “We build it all together – it doesn’t matter who came up with the initial idea.”

What is Mark’s biggest goal as a musician? “I look forward to getting the point as the artist where I have enough clout that I could do something great – give back to the community. And if that ever comes to pass, I will be so grateful.”

“I would love to use my ability to champion some great cause – but I’m not sure it would amount to much – but I’d love to be able to do something like that. The best I can do right now is support my brothers and sisters in music.”

As far as we are concerned, supporting others is a mighty noble thing. It keeps the scene alive, and breathes life into its less traveled corners.
