The following is part of the ‘Articles Formally Known As” series. This is being reshared exactly as I sent it to my editor at the Beachcomber – with no additional edits or corrections included. This article was originally submitted in November 2019.
Panama City’s CreativeCon is a niche convention that amplifies the sense of community within geek-culture.
They support locals first – the artists, comic book artists, authors, and so much more from our backyard. This annual event creates a bridge to the arts, offering a platform for expression and visibility.
CreativeCon has grown from the ground up. It began in a library, as a handful of artists showcasing their projects and has steadily grown to their current location at the Marina Civic Center.
The event is dotted with normal Con experiences, like costume contests, fun activities, panels, and vendors who sell unusual memorabilia with that chance to find the perfect item to fill out your collection.
Yet, one of the coolest aspects is the persuasive feeling of community. When Mom and I arrived at the event on Saturday, before we even made it out of the parking lot, we spotted a friend. Before we even hit the doors of the convention, there were already hugs and catch-up chatter. That feeling continued throughout the day, where each rounded corner could lead to a friendly face.
If you’ve never been to CreativeCon or don’t know many people in the area – that’s okay too. Chances are you’ll leave the event with a few new friends and feel a little less alone in the world.
Whether you enjoy cosplaying or want to meet other people who are just into the same nerdy, geeky stuff that you’re into – CreativeCon is a fantastic experience.
