Photography Profiles: DeeDee Kohl

What first attracted you to photography?
I lived in Micronesia during part of my teen years and we were surrounded by so much natural beauty. It was truly paradise. I just remember thinking about how I wanted to preserve everything I saw.

When was the first time you felt like a professional photographer?
I don’t know if I even feel like one now lol! I think there’s so much room for growth and constant learning in photography and I feel like I’m just getting started.

Favorite style or subject to shoot?
I love nature/landscape photography and creative/artistic collabs (darker/spookier the better!) are a ton of fun but when I did photos at a show about a year ago it sparked something! Musicians/performers are sharing a part of themselves with us and when I can capture those moments/emotions it hits me on a different level. To be able to share those moments with others that weren’t there or even ones that were but would like to preserve that moment, that’s pretty special to me.

Favorite piece of equipment?
I have a Minolta X-700 that has only been used once when my dad took photos of the Reagan speech in Berlin with it and it meant a lot to me when he gifted me with it last year.

What is your dream photography gig?
Honestly, I’m really doing it already. I’m surrounded by music and music is a huge part of my life. Getting picked up as a travel/tour photographer or working for a magazine would be pretty friggin rad too!

Any advice for others who are interested in photography?
Learn how to use your camera in manual and be open to constructive criticism from trusted people. We learn constantly. Every single time I pick my camera up I learn something new, or something not to do again lol.

The best piece of advice you received starting out?  
Don’t throw away/delete photos! Thank you for that Nikki!

What services do you offer?
I spend a good portion of my time working at music venues but I also do portraits, headshots, band or company promos, fashion, smaller weddings, parties, and I’m always up for artistic/creative collaboration photos.
